?‘s about Sunday services
Q: What’s the difference between the traditional and contemporary services?
A: At FUMC, we strive to provide an experience where people can connect to God and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. We offer two ‘styles’ of worship to fit your personality and spiritual needs. Our traditional services incorporate liturgy, traditional hymns with organ accompaniment, prayer, scripture, and choral music. Our contemporary service is more free form but still respectful of liturgy and worship. In contemporary service, you will find a variety of instruments, praise music, and a more casual atmosphere. Both services serve Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month.
We encourage you to visit both services. We hope that one of the services fills your spiritual needs and makes you feel that you’ve come home.
Q: What should I wear?
A: You’ll find a wide variety of clothing at our worship services. From shorts to suits and jeans to dresses. We want you to join us and enjoy your experience. Please wear whatever makes you comfortable!
Q: Are children welcome in worship services?
A: At First United Methodist Church of Crown Point, we love having children in attendance in our services and in our Children’s Ministry programs. We understand that children may be noisy or may need to move around and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We are here to support you and your family in your walk with faith. We consider ourselves to be a family and hope that you feel at home with us!
For more information on how make your child’s worship experience more relaxed and meaningful, please see our resource, Welcoming Children into Worship
Q: What are the little red books at the end of each pew bench in the sanctuary?
A: At the end of each pew, you’ll find a red vinyl folder with our attendance sheets. We ask that you please sign in each week. We use these records to track attendance, respond to needs, and adjust resources for services. Thank you so much!
?‘s about joining / membership
Q: Do I need to become a member in order to be a part of the church family?
A: No! There are actually very few parts of our church that actually require membership (for instance, some committees). Regardless of membership status, we encourage you to attend and become part of our services, classes, events, committees, or ministries.
However, we joyfully welcome all new members. No matter what brought you to our doors, we would be honored to have you call us ‘home.’
Q: What am I required to do in order to become an official member?
A: If you are not transferring your membership from another United Methodist Church, you:
- Must be a baptized believer of Jesus Christ. If you have not been baptized, you may be baptized day you join the church.
- Must make a public profession of faith and commit to supporting the church. This will be done with your sponsors on the Membership Sunday that you join.
- Must attend a Membership Class prior to joining.
Q: What is a New Member Class?
A: Attending a New Member Class is required prior to joining. Classes are held approximately every 2 -3 months and usually take place on a Sunday afternoon at our church. It is an informal meeting with our Pastor, the Outreach Director, and people, like you, who are have some interest in becoming members. At the class, you will learn about the United Methodist Church core beliefs and about opportunities for you and your family within our church family. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions. We do not require official membership for you to attend services or participate in congregational activities; however, we would be honored to have you join. If you want to join after attending the New Member Class, you can let us know any time that you’d like to join on the next Membership Sunday.
Q: What is a sponsor and how do I get one?
A: A sponsor is a member of the congregation who volunteers to present you to the church on Membership Sunday and encourage you in your faith journey. You may choose someone you know or we will gladly find someone for you.
Q: What happens on Membership Sunday?
A:On your Membership Sunday, you will arrive about 15-20 minutes early to meet in the Parlor with your sponsor before the worship service. Your picture will be taken for our records and for the newsletter and you will be given a name tag, a corsage, and a script of what will be happening and what you need to say or do in the upcoming service. During the service, you will stand up front with your sponsor and other new members and take the “vows” of membership by reading from your script.
